The Digital Landscape of Local Government

Local Government Digital Maturity Index

This Government News Digital Maturity Index study was conducted across Australia and New Zealand to gauge the extent to which councils are adopting digital strategies and practices across 4 key areas:

  • Strategy and Policy
  • External Customer Service
  • Internal Processes and Operations
  • Performance Metrics and Standards

The findings reflect a strong desire for progress, with 90% of respondents acknowledging that digital is the way of the future, but only 20% believing their council is doing enough to transition towards digital ways of working.

This is a major disconnect but also highlights the opportunity for councils to address the areas that are inhibiting the best digital experience for both citizens and workers.

The report points to strong leadership, more streamlined processes, creative approaches to staff engagement, transitioning from legacy systems or maximising the returns of existing systems all as critical factors to the successful transition to a citizen-centric digital local government.
